There are so many theories and experts out there telling you what you need to do for your body. Eat this way – don’t eat that way, exercise like this – don’t exercise like that, work really hard – play more, set boundaries – be more giving, AAAHH!! It is dizzying all the advice available for the asking.
The environment we live in has set doctors up as the experts on our bodies and the rest of us are just stupid to know what our body needs and what is happening right inside our own body. We are the only ones that live in our unique flesh suit. Who do you listen to?
The answer is so simple that it is too easily missed. You listen to yourself.
What do I mean?
I mean you have all the answers about what is best for you right inside. Yes, you are the expert! The expert for yourself. The expert of your body!
The language of the body
How do you listen to the language of the body? Your body is speaking to you all the time. Are you aware of the signals? Every time your neck hurts, you have a stomach pain or you contract the latest cold; your body is speaking to you. Sometimes softly and sometimes screaming!
We walk around annoyed that the latest thing is standing in our way, like the headache is just such a nuisance to our busy day, instead of hearing the pleading behind it. “Please take care of me.”
I threw up 3-4 times a week for over 20 years. Nobody had any answers for me for why this was happening. I blamed my ‘stupid’ body for not being normal. I blamed the doctors for not having a quick fix. I blamed my parents for my genetic material. I blamed my creator for blessing me with a ‘broken’ body. I just wanted to be normal! “Why can’t I eat anything I want and not feel bad and not gain weight!” I moaned in my distress. I felt like there were no answers. That wasn’t true. There were answers all around, I just didn’t want to hear them.
When I gave up that there was something wrong with me, the blame game & trying to find a quick fix pill; I heard the language of my body.
My body spoke to me every day, all day! When I ate something and immediately had acid reflux, my body told me “I don’t like that!” When I had an interaction with someone and found myself with a headache after, my body rebuked “You are not taking care of me!” When I felt bloated, my body yelled, “Please don’t eat that!” When my muscles hurt, my body nudged, “Please stretch me!” My body was speaking all the time, all I had to do was give up my desire for the quick fix and listen.
How do I listen?
I adopted a perspective of exploration. My body was locked up and I was the only one who had the key. I just needed to find the key for my own body.
I started to record what I ate and how it made me feel. It became addicting to give up my right to eat something and instead adopt an attitude of exploration into what made me feel good. Soon the foods my body didn’t like were easy to avoid. When you realize that a certain food is your brand of arsenic, you will stop moaning about the injustice of it all and just avoid it.
I muscle tested. I would ask my body what was good for it and I was told.
Try this exercise:
Stand up straight, ask your body a question that you know is true.
“Is my name _______?” Watch which way your body leans. (Don’t think too hard on this.) Allow your body to relax and see which way you lean. When you find it, that is your yes! The opposite direction is your no. (I do this for several questions first, to make sure which way my polarity is that day.)
Then put a food in front of you, or put your hand over a food. Which way did your body lean? Is that food good for you right now?
I have used this exercise for a multitude of questions. At this point, I have gotten so in tune with my body I don’t even need to lean. I know just by thinking about foods which is best for me.
It’s really as simple as – Eat & Do What Works for You
I remember the day that I went to my massage therapist and I told her that my hips and knees were hurting. I asked her if there were stretches I could do to help the pain. As she was showing me the stretches, I casually said, “yeah, it always hurts after I go for a walk around my neighborhood.” She said, “then don’t do that, find a different form of exercise.” What a novel idea. It had never occurred to me that my body didn’t like walking. The ‘experts’ say that walking is the least impact on the body. Not on my body. I found a different form of exercise that made my body feel good.
