Breath is the source of your life on this planet! Have you ever noticed that when you’re stressed your chest tightens and your breathing becomes shallow? You feel locked in a physical prison? When you get overwhelmed with fear your face flushes and your breath is stifled? When you are angry you are snorting out hot air like a fire-breathing dragon?
When a thought comes through our mind that triggers us like, “you are not good enough,” “they wronged me!” “I have too much to do!” or “I can’t handle this,” the body has a physiological reaction which is most noticeable in your breath. We cannot always catch these negative thoughts before the physical response, but did you know that you can change your thoughts by going through the body? The fastest way is through your breath.
I performed on stage for years in musicals and operas. I found that I could not control my fears by going through my mind. No amount of telling myself that I was completely prepared, had done this a million times and there was no need for me to be nervous; made any difference in my physical response of fear. I did find, however, that if I focused on the physical response of fear in my body and changed the pattern of my breathing, it reversed the thinking in my mind. It has been so effective for me that now when I am in a stressful situation I habitually breathe deeply and slowly. People often ask me in difficult situations, “how can you be so calm?” “It’s a habit,” I tell them, “the more charged the situation, the more relaxed I become.” You too can easily change your mood, give yourself courage in an instant & invite peace in to your life with these 3 simple to use, proven breaths.

Take in a deep breath – blow it out hard
As you blow out your breath imagine that the undesired mood is leaving your body, you are blowing it out of you. Upon exiting the body the breath changes from the undesired mood to joy, happiness & love. Then breathe, literally drink in the joy, happiness & love that you just created.Continue this breath until you have the new desired mood.

Take in a breath of courage – blow out your fear
Think of a football player who is about to be tackled, they have the ball and are determined to make their goal. Would they breathe shallow and fast and allow their fear to overtake them? If they did, they wouldn’t be a professional player for long. They breathe deep and ground themselves into the earth. “You will not knock me over!!” They refuse to be taken down easy. We are going to use that same breath to give us courage in any situation.
The breath of courage is deep, going all the way down to your feet. It is slow with determination. Make a strong stance, (like a gladiator) plant your feet, bring your arms to your tummy & clench your fists. Take a deep breath of courage.
The next time you feel fear, take a breath of courage and watch how your confidence in the situation takes a rocket leap up!

Breath in 4 counts – Pause – Breathe out 5 counts – Pause
When we feel pushed by life and are in a frenzy to get things done, we feel out of control and out of balance. We run here and there to satisfy jobs, bosses, children, spouses, and the demands of home life. Our breaths become frenetic. We can bring peace into our busy life by following this simple breath to lower your heart rate and allow peace to come into your life.
Breathe in deeply and slowly for 4 counts, then pause. By pause I mean allow everything in the body to stop. You will find incredible peace in these pauses alone. Then breath out slowly for 5 counts, again pause. We are allowing are body, mind & spirit to slow down as we discipline our breath through counts and pauses. Continue this breath until you reach your desired level of peace.
